Appointment of new Chaplain

The Rev Canon Dr Philip John Bourne, who has been appointed as Chaplain to St James, was born in West London and grew up in Gloucestershire. After undergraduate studies in Brighton, he was a music teacher in a Quaker School in West Yorkshire while studying for a research degree in moral philosophy. From there he moved to Durham where he trained for the ordained ministry before returning to the Wakefield Diocese, south of Leeds, as a curate. This was followed by four years on the chaplaincy team at Exeter University, then thirteen years in The Netherlands. In January 2007, Philip moved to Brighton and served the Diocese of Chichester as the Diocesan Director of Ordinands, overseeing a discernment process for the ordained ministry and placing curates in parishes. In March 2014 he went to the Diocese of Exeter to be Rector of Sidmouth Parish Church and Team Rector of the Sid Valley Mission Community. He is a Canon of Gibraltar Cathedral in the Diocese in Europe.

He has three adult sons, Tom, Sam and Joe, and a grandson, Jake. He shares his life with a friend and priest colleague, Robert Chavner, who will be accompanying him to Porto.

Philip is very much looking forward to moving to Porto and working with the Chaplaincy Council and congregation of Saint James as we prayerfully seek God’s blessing and guidance for the continuation and development of our life and ministry together.
